The Do’s of Summer- The Unofficial Start of Summer is Here

Do use Sunscreen - Apply liberally and often especially after swimming.  We recommend something with zinc oxide and mineral based products for sensitive skin.  Use something with both UVA and UVB protection and SPF 30 to 50. Babies under 6 months should avoid excessive sunscreen use and stay out of the sun.  All kids should use protective clothing, wear a hat, sunglasses and limit sun exposure between 10a and 4 pm.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has a great article with some very helpful sunscreen tips. click here

Do Teach your kids to swim-There are lots of options close to home both indoor and out. See our Learn to Swim article for some great resources.

Do Wear a Helmet- If Biking, Scootering or Skateboarding-  Protect those beautiful brains!

Do minimize bug spray- Light colored loose fitting protective clothing is best. If bug spray is a must the recommendation for children older than 6 months of age is to use 10% to 30% DEET products.  DEET should not be used on children younger than 2 months of age.

If used make sure to wash off before bed.  Do not use combination sunscreen and bug repellent products.  Sunscreen needs to be reapplied frequently and bug repellent only one time.

Do go outside and have fun! - Catch fireflies and enjoy the warmer days and evenings.
