February is not only the month of Valentine’s Day but it is also National Heart Health Month! Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Fortunately, it is also the most preventable. The American Heart Association states that cardiovascular health in children is key to preventing heart disease later in life. Early intervention is important. Knowing your cholesterol numbers and starting heart healthy habits at an early age is important for prevention. Maintaining a healthy weight and heart is important to preventing obesity and high cholesterol. The following are a few tipis to a healthy heart:
- Encourage healthy eating habits: fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, beans and whole grains
- Limit foods or beverages with added sugars
- Encourage physical activity everyday and make it a family affair
- Use the stairs instead of the elevator, walk or bike together
- Limit screen time (not just for the kids!) Set a good example for your kids
- Promote positive mental health to reduce stress. Increased stress can cause elevated blood pressure and inflammation that put your cardiovascular system at risk
- Encourage and promote healthy sleep to reduce heart stress
