Happy Earth Day
Lets Plant a Garden
Today is a day to celebrate mother nature and enjoy some time outside. While its still a little chilly here in the DMV, warmer weather is fast approaching.
Now is a great time to think about planting a summer garden. A garden can be as big or small as you make it. A few pots on a patio or front porch or a plot of grass in the yard both work well. Planting vegetables with your kids is fun and a great way to get picky eaters to try new things.
Start with some good quality potting soil. You can use seeds or purchase small plants at local nurseries or larger plant stores with garden departments such as Lowes, Home Depot or Walmart. Choose some kid friendly veggies or fruits that are easy to grow like peppers, cherry tomatoes, green beans or strawberries. Cucumber, zucchini, squash and eggplant are also easy to grow in this area but sometimes need a little more space.
Encourage kids to check the plants frequently to water and watch them grow. Kids will love to track when seedlings or small plants sprout, grow blossoms and ultimately become a fruit or vegetable. Then it is harvest time! The pickiest of eaters can’t resist trying something they grew. Even if your plants only yield a small harvest, your children will still love trying the “fruits” of their labor.
